Item Story & Historical Context

Issued in December 1942, this original wartime savings bond represents a chilling primary document from the height of World War II in the Pacific.

Printed precisely on the first anniversary of the war’s outbreak (December 1941), this 6th Issue bond was issued by The Nippon Kangyo Bank to siphon civilian capital directly into imperial defense production. The front of the bond is heavily decorated with vivid wartime mobilization imagery, including Type 97 medium tanks, naval battleships, formations of military bombers, radio broadcast towers, and military banners.

What sets this specific piece apart is the striking red rectangular overstamp on the upper right: a special commemorative seal reading “1st Anniversary Commemoration of the Greater East Asia War”, alongside a round emblem depicting Mount Fuji under the Rising Sun. The reverse contains the complete 15-year redemption table (1943–1958) and lottery prize tier rules—financial promises made by an empire at the height of its expansion, frozen just before the tide of war turned.
