Item Story & Historical Context
During the early decades of the 20th century, Arashiyama in western Kyoto emerged as one of the country’s most celebrated cultural destinations, renowned for its timeless landscapes, ancient bamboo groves, and cherry blossom-draped mountain slopes along the Katsura River.
This charming vintage postcard captures a quiet, sunlit approach toward the famous Togetsukyo Bridge (Moon Crossing Bridge). Flanked by towering pines and blooming spring cherry blossoms, the foreground features a traditional hexagonal wooden pavilion overlooking the pathway and wooden bridge railings spanning the river.
Printed using early multi-color collotype lithography with soft hand-tinted tones, the card includes dual-language typography along the lower border: “View the Bridge-togetau Kyoto.” The reverse showcases classic red Art Nouveau-inspired divided-back postal typography and publisher marks from a historic Kyoto art press.
Preserved in completely blank, unposted condition, this card offers a nostalgic snapshot of Kyoto’s Golden Age of tourism.
